The Military Order of Avis has a chart, approved by a decree of the President of the Republic, with the maximum number of awards available at each moment for each of the classes, except those of Knight or Dame, which has no limit to the number of awards that may be conferred.
The different classes of the Military Order of Avis correspond to the following posts in the military hierarchy:
a) Vice admiral or lieutenant general and higher classes: Grand Cross;
b) Captain or colonel and rear admiral or major general: Grand Officer;
c) Commander or lieutenant colonel: Commander;
d) Lieutenant commander or major: Officer;
e) Lieutenant or captain: Knight or Dame.
The above classes are mandatory and may only be changed, in strictly exceptional cases, on the initiative of the President of the Republic.
CLASSES
Grand Cross
Insignia
Riband: green silk riband, placed across the chest from right to left, with the badge hanging from the bow.
Star: golden star in glittering rays, with a central disc in white enamel overlapped by the cross of the Order, with gold fillets and surrounded by a golden laurel festoon.
The Riband of the Grand Cross is always worn with the respective star. The miniature and the rosette, with the colour of the Order and with a gold braid are also part of the insignia of the Grand Cross.

Grand Officer
Insignia
Ribbon: the badge of the Order suspended from the neck by a green ribbon.
Star: golden star in glittering rays, with a central disc in white enamel overlapped by the cross of the Order, with gold fillets and surrounded by a golden laurel festoon.
The miniature and the rosette, with the colour of the Order and with a silver and gold braid are also part of the insignia of the Grand Officer. Ladies awarded the Military Order of Avis may wear the insignia hanging from a bow.

Commander

The miniature and the rosette, with the colour of the Order are also part of an Officer’s insignia. Ladies awarded the Military Order of Avis may wear the insignia hanging from a bow.
In ceremonial acts, Officers may wear the badge with the size of the Commander’s, hanging from the neck by a green ribbon.

The miniature and a small ribbon, with the colour of the Order are also part of a Knight’s insignia. Ladies awarded the Military Order of Avis may wear the insignia hanging from a bow.
In ceremonial acts, Knights may wear the badge with the Commander’s size, hanging from the neck by a green ribbon.
